Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, is a perennial herb from the mint family. Its appeal to cats has intrigued both pet owners and scientists alike for centuries. For many cats, just a whiff of this unassuming plant can induce behaviors that range from playful and energetic to relaxed and drowsy. But what exactly does catnip do to cats, and why does it have such a profound effect?
Catnip contains a compound called nepetalactone, which is responsible for triggering a range of reactions in cats. When a cat smells catnip, the nepetalactone binds to receptors in the olfactory system, which sends signals to the brain. Specifically, the chemical interacts with areas of the brain associated with emotion and behavior, including the amygdala and hypothalamus. These parts of the brain are responsible for regulating emotions, social responses, and sexual behaviors.
Once nepetalactone is inhaled, the effects on a cat are immediate and often very noticeable. Cats may roll around, rub their heads and bodies against objects, meow, purr, leap around, or exhibit playful, almost kitten-like behavior. Some cats also become more aggressive or hyperactive when exposed to catnip, swatting at toys or engaging in mock hunting behaviors. However, these effects are short-lived, usually lasting between 5 to 15 minutes. After this period, the cat typically loses interest in catnip until its sensitivity resets, which can take several hours.
One of the fascinating aspects of catnip is that it affects cats not only through inhalation but also ingestion. When consumed, catnip can have a more sedative-like effect, calming the cat and possibly inducing sleep. However, not all cats are affected by catnip in the same way, and some may not react at all.
